Broadway shines its light

The audience joined the cast of "The Producers" in singing "God Bless America" Thursday night.

(CNN) -- There's an old saying in show business: The show must go on.

In the aftermath of Tuesday's World Trade Center attack, however, there was some concern about when that would happen.

New York reeled in shock and mourned its losses. And Broadway, the Great White Way, went dark. Tuesday night's performances were canceled. So were Wednesday's matinees and evening shows.

The lights went on again Thursday. The only question: Would anyone show?

"I don't know what to expect and I don't know if anyone will come," said Tom Selleck, starring in a revival of "A Thousand Clowns."

There was no doubt Broadway would do its part.

"We all have to try, because otherwise in a sense they win," said Nathan Lane, star of the hit show "The Producers." "They are robbing us of our lives, and they've already taken too much."

For the most part, the crowds did turn out. And Broadway put on a heck of a performance.
