Poundstone sentenced to alcohol rehab

SANTA MONICA, California (CNN) -- Comedian Paula Poundstone was sentenced Wednesday to 180 days in alcohol rehabilitation after pleading no contest to child endangerment charges.

Three charges of felony lewd conduct involving a girl under 14 years old were dropped at her sentencing hearing. She had pleaded no contest to one felony charge and one misdemeanor charge of child endangerment last month. All the charges involved Poundstone's adoptive and foster children.

After the sentencing, Poundstone's attorney, Steven Cron, said the comedian's June 27 arrest stemmed from an incident in which she was driving four children to get ice cream while she was drunk.

He said her alcoholism led to poor judgment and that was why she was charged with endangerment.

Poundstone, 41, has said her drinking "helped to create a dangerous situation for the children," and has been at a live-in rehab facility in Malibu for the past 125 days.

The judge also sentenced Poundstone to five years probation, 200 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine plus restitution to the victims, including any therapy for them.

As part of her plea bargain, Poundstone is not allowed to be a foster parent in the future or to adopt any more children. She has three adopted children and had two foster children; her relationship with the foster children has been terminated. The status of her relationship with her three adopted children is not immediately clear.
