E-commerce dispute management protocol announced

(IDG) -- The New York-based American Arbitration Association (AAA) and some major industry leaders, such as Microsoft, announced Wednesday a new b-to-b (business-to-business) e-commerce dispute management protocol to disarm conflict between buyers and sellers.

The protocol is an educational wake-up call and it will give practitioners the necessary confidence in online transactions to be successful in the b-to-b e-commerce arena, said William K. Slate II, president and CEO of the AAA, in a statement. Companies seeking to gain from this growing marketplace need to learn to avoid the pitfalls of protracted court battles that can last years and cost billions, he said.

The actual protocol is about a page in length and it talks of fairness, continuity of business, use of clear management policies, range of options for resolving disputes, and commitment to technology. The AAA is developing a new technology-focused dispute management service. The actual protocol can be read at www.adr.org.

Some of the initial signers of the protocol include Microsoft, AT&T, DaimlerChrysler, PepsiCo, and Philips Semiconductors.
