MacWorld Online

(IDG) -- Macworld Expo opened Tuesday, and while most Mac users are focusing on Apple's likely hardware and software rollouts, numerous other exhibitors will be debuting Mac products as well.

The Macworld Expo exhibitor list features many familiar faces, plus some unusual ones, including the Internal Revenue Service and Industrial Light & Magic, which will be recruiting job candidates. Job seekers "should come prepared to submit a resume and portfolio/reel," ILM said.

Another company making its Macworld debut is Alias|Wavefront, which will roll out the long-awaited Maya Complete for Mac OS X. Director of Maya Technologies Richard Kerris told Macworld UK that the software will cost the same as the Windows and Irix versions, and will work with all major compositing packages for the Mac. The company will announce ship dates at Expo, he said.

Other 3-D graphics developers will also be exhibiting, including Auto-Des-Sys, Newtek and Maxon Computer. The latter company will demonstrate BodyPaint 3-D, a sophisticated 3-D painting and texture-generating application that complements its Cinema 4D XL software.

Dantz Development plans to demonstrate pre-release versions of Retrospect Backup and the Retrospect Client with Aqua interface features running natively under Mac OS X. Dantz has not announced a ship date, but said it plans to release the software "as soon as possible following the release of Apple's new operating system." Dantz will also give away at least 20 backup devices, including CD-RW and tape drives, and will have show specials on its backup software: $29.95 for Retrospect Express Backup (SRP $79), $99 for Retrospect Desktop Backup (SRP $249) and $99 for the Retrospect Client Five-Pack (SRP $175).

Proxim/Farallon (the former acquired the latter last year) will demonstrate the latter's consumer/SOHO networking products in a booth designed to replicate a real home.

ThePowerXChange will be back, showcasing plug-ins and extensions for such graphics packages as Adobe Photoshop and QuarkXPress. Several other plug-in developers will be on hand, including Vivid Details of Test Strip fame and Alien Skin Software, which will be showing its new Eye Candy 4000 Photoshop filters.

Orange Micro will demonstrate its recently introduced line of USB 2.0 products, including the new OrangeUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed CardBus PC Card, which provides Cardbus-compatible laptop computers with four USB 2.0 ports for less than $100.

Power On Software will show an update to Rewind, its file-recovery utility. Version 1.0.3, the company said, improves performance, corrects problems with disk drive access, fixes compatibility issues with Graphic Converter, Photoshop, Netscape, and Internet Explorer; and adds support for disks and partitions as small as 200MB. It works with Mac OS 8.1 or later and now permits installation over a network.

Charismac Engineering plans to show Discribe 4.0, the latest version of its CD-mastering software, which adds the ability to drag and drop MP3 files to create audio CDs. The upgrade also includes a utility that lets you record vinyl, tape or voice to disk. The company will also provide a sneak preview of Backup Mastery, a back-up utility.

Matias will debut a Mac version of its Half Keyboard, which allows users to touch-type with one hand. The idea was first proposed by Jef Raskin, a member of the original Mac development team, who will be talking up the input device in the Matias booth.

The show floor will also feature several areas dedicated to specific Mac interests, including MacTech Central, featuring technical presentations; a Music & Audio Showcase featuring live concerts in addition to product demos, and Special Interest Boulevards on Digital Media, Small Business, Sci-Tech, Education/Assistive Technology, 3-D graphics and Edutainment.
