(IDG) -- The wait continues as hardcore American role-playing-game fanatics anticipate the U.S. localization of one of Japan's most successful RPGs of all-time, "Dragon Warrior VII." As the translation continues, GamePro got a chance to play a preview version. Gamers will immediately feel that retro feeling, with "DWVII"'s 2-D character sprites populating 3-D environments that are similar to last winter's "Persona 2." The graphics were still rough, with washed-out colors in addition to blocky characters and environments, but those of you who enjoyed this summer's "Final Fantasy Chronicles" won't be bothered.

Gameplay featured all classic trademarks of the "Dragon Warrior" series including stirring battles and an in-depth character-building system that enables players to choose skills to customize characters. While the graphics, sounds, and user interface were all simple (to the point of being unattractive in this glossy, next-gen world), fans of the series will no doubt appreciate "Dragon Warrior VII" when it arrives.
