TOPLINE: From homegrown companies that trade on the Nasdaq to cutting edge research facilities, Vancouver is an apt locale for a regional Comdex trade show. Situated on the brink of Canada's west coast, nestled between mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the city known as "Lotus Land" is no stranger to high-tech.

IN CONTEXT: The word "Comdex" has become synonymous with the gargantuan spectacle of electronics and excess held in Las Vegas each November. While smaller in size, regional spinoffs such as Comdex Vancouver can offer valuable snapshots of high-tech trends.

Technology companies will be touting product developments and innovative solutions. Among the high-profile cases: demonstrations of Microsoft Corp.'s XP operating system, Corel Corp.'s latest CorelDRAW 10 graphics program, and Palm's newest personal digital assistant. Officials expect about 25,000 attendees to explore the show during its three days in Vancouver.
