Caldera, SCO announce Linux wrapper for Open Unix

(IDG) -- Caldera Systems Inc. and The Santa Cruz Operation Inc. (SCO) announced Monday in conjunction with the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover that they will release a new Unix-based operating system that will also support Linux applications.

The release, titled Open Unix 8, will maintain compatibility and continuity with the UnixWare 7 operating system, meaning most Open Unix 8, UnixWare 7, and Linux operations can run without modification or recompilation, the companies said in a statement.

The new release was pegged to the debut of Caldera International, a new company to be formed after Caldera completes the acquisition of SCO's Server Software and Professional Services divisions, a transaction which is expected to close in the second quarter. As part of the acquisition, Caldera will take possession of the Unix kernel.

The companies will begin shipping beta versions of the new operating system in April, they said. The product is slated to be generally available by mid-2001. It will be available to current UnixWare 7 customers as a system upgrade.
