Compaq unveils wireless services
By Linda Rosencrance (IDG) -- Compaq has launched a new suite of wireless services. The company says the package is designed to make it easier for corporations to take advantage of mobile technologies. In a statement, Compaq says the new wireless consulting, integration and support offerings from Compaq Global Services will help companies integrate mobile computing devices into their business applications.
According to the company, the new offerings combine proven integration services with the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, Compaq iPAQ BlackBerry wireless e-mail device and servers to help customers rapidly deploy wireless LANs, mobile messaging, mobile customer relationship management and mobile enterprise applications. "The early wireless pioneers had to cobble together highly [customized] software, applications and devices over low-performance networks," says Bob Simmons, global practice director, Wireless & Networking, Compaq Global Services, in the statement. "Now, with the proliferation of improved mobility technology, better networks and open standards, Compaq can help businesses more rapidly -- and strategically -- mobilize their applications to achieve business impact." Richard Dean, an analyst at IDC in Framingham, Massachusetts, says Compaq is matching its wireless services with its strong wireless product portfolio. "It's a nice match to have a product portfolio and follow it up with services to help companies integrate wireless products more seamlessly," he says. Craig Mathias, an analyst at Farpoint Group in Ashland, Massachusetts, says the success of these offerings will depend on the quality of the individuals Compaq can attract and retain to implement its new suite of services. "Success will depend on the individuals' knowledge," he says. "You don't learn this out of a book." |
