Compaq to double memory in its iPaq pocket PC

(IDG) -- Compaq will introduce in April an iPaq handheld computer with double the memory of its current iPaq models, setting the stage for a number of improvements to the product line scheduled to appear this year.

The iPaq is Compaq's pocket PC, competing with other pocket PC devices from Palm and Handspring.

The new iPaq will sport 64MB of RAM, double the current 32MB available in the company's H3600 series iPaq, said Nora Hahn, a product representative for Houston, Texas-based Compaq. Palm's top of the line Palm VIIx ships with 8MB of memory.

Information about the new iPaq was inadvertently posted on Compaq's Web site, Hahn said.

"We've always said we'll make enhancements to the iPaq line," said Hahn. "I believe we had this in our quiver for some time."

Beyond the increase in the iPaq's memory, many of the enhancements to the iPaq will arrive as enhancements to the system's Expansion Pack, Hahn said. The iPaq Expansion Pack is a docking bay that adds functionality to an iPaq device.

Improved wireless features and memory expansion cards are among the enhancements to the Expansion Pack. Such improvements are expected to be announced "at various points during the year," Hahn said.

Wireless Internet access devices such as the iPaq and Palm systems will boom in popularity over the next several years and eventually displace the PC as the preferred Internet access method, according to a study by Cahners In-Stat Group, an industry think tank based in Scottsdale, Ariz.
