Adobe to announce Japan e-book deal
(IDG) -- Adobe Systems Inc. will announce Monday its plan to put the Japanese version of Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader 2.0 and Adobe Contents Server 2.0 on the market, the company said Thursday. At a Monday press conference, to be attended by Shantanu Narayen, Adobe's senior vice president of worldwide product development, the company will also announce support from Japanese comic book content provider Ebook Initiative Japan Co. Ltd. (EBI), according to Yoh Tsujimura, a spokeswoman for Adobe Systems.
Companies such as Adobe and EBI hope network publishing will become a major part of the publishing industry in the future, delivering content to any device, especially to e-books, a category of devices that EBI is hoping to promote. The two pieces of software assist in getting content based on Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) to the Web and to e-book devices. EBI started as an experimental research organization in 1998 consisting of 145 companies that were interested in the concept of e-books. After distributing e-book content to terminals stationed at major bookstores for one and a half years and receiving feedback from users, the organization founded EBI in May 2000. Its content is mainly Japanese comic books provided at its site, "10 Days Book ." EBI President and CEO Yuusuke Suzuki believes that since comic books have a 40 percent share in the current Japanese publication market, they will be also be in demand in the e-book market. EBI plans to concentrate on developing e-book device designs that include high-quality displays, rich colors and readable, small text, Suzuki said. The press conference will be held three days prior to the start of the Tokyo International Book Fair. With electronic publishing's increasingly high profile, a companion Electronic Book & Multimedia Fair is also being held. RELATED STORIES:
