Wyse launches flat-panel terminal

(IDG) -- Wyse Technology has launched a 15-inch digital flat panel terminal, based on Microsoft's Windows operating system, the company said Monday.

The Winterm 3630LE is designed to be used in a LAN environment where standard office applications can be accessed via the Web or from a central server. The terminal, which is aimed at the healthcare and retail industry, runs Windows CE, a flavor of Microsoft's operating system that runs on handheld PCs and other devices.

The flat-panel LCD (liquid crystal display) terminal needs only about 25 percent as much space as a traditional monitor, according to the company. It can also be removed from the desk completely and mounted on a wall to save even more space, the company said.

Wyse hopes the terminal will be popular with thin-client systems, which typically connect streamlined end-user systems with back-end operating system including Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server, Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, Citrix Systems. MetaFrame and Citrix NFuse, the company said in a statement.

The terminal also includes Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser, and a 300MHz Geode processor from National Semiconductor. It also features two USB (universal serial bus) ports, an Ethernet connection and built-in speakers.

The Winterm 3630LE is available immediately through Wyse partners, with a price of $1,499 for a single unit, with multi-unit discounts. The terminal can also be rented through the company's WyseCapital program.
