Kodak launches easy-share consumer camera line
(IDG) -- Kodak is unveiling this week the first two members of a new family of consumer digital cameras, along with a camera docking station designed to make it easier to move images to PCs, print them, and share them online. The DX3500 Digital Camera, priced at $299, is scheduled to ship in early May with the $79 docking station. The $399 DX3600 Zoom Digital Camera is scheduled for release in July, according to Kodak.
Kodak is targeting newcomers to digital photography with its easy-to-use models and especially the docking station, says Nancy Carr, vice president of digital and applied imaging at Kodak. The Kodak DX3500 and the DX3600 Zoom are the first of the Easy Share line, usable with the new docking station. Both provide 2.2-megapixel resolution and support fast, sequential shots. The DX3600 Zoom has a 6X zoom (2X optical, 3X digital), and supports continuous digital video and sound. The DX3500 has a 3X digital zoom and a close-up mode. Both cameras have 8MB of internal memory, which supports an estimated 48 pictures at low resolution without a CompactFlash memory card, but each also has an expansion slot for a card. These units replace Kodak's DC3400 and DC3800 models. When you place a camera in the Easy Share docking station, it automatically launches the photo management software and uploads the pictures from the camera to the PC. You can rename all of the shots as they are transferred, giving them a more useful file name than the cryptic numbers and letters that digital cameras assign when you snap the shutter. It also automatically charges the camera's battery pack, although you can use replaceable AA batteries in the camera as well. The docking station itself has both a battery pack and an AC adapter.
