'Xbox' name is Microsoft's to use after all

(IDG) -- Drowned out by all the hype of Microsoft's upcoming Xbox home videogame console was the niggling little fact that there was another company out there that already had the name Xbox and had trademarked it: XBOX Technologies.
But consider this yet another obstacle conquered by the Redmond, Wash., firm, because Microsoft and XBOX Technologies announced late Friday that they have reached a deal by which Microsoft will get all rights to the name Xbox. Financial terms of the deal will remain confidential, the companies said. Since Microsoft will have all trademark rights to the name, XBOX Technologies will change its name.

Microsoft's Xbox, the software company's first entry in the lucrative home gaming market, is set to launch in North America on Nov. 8 with a price of $299. The company is betting heavily on the system's success and has pledged more than $500 million in marketing support for the launch. Microsoft faces heavy competition, however, from long-time console kings Sony and Nintendo of America. Sony's $299 PlayStation 2 is already on the market and Nintendo will be launching its GameCube, set to retail at $199, this fall.
