Beijing plans greener environment to win Olympic bid
(CNN) -- Hoping to host the 2008 Olympic games, Beijing is laying out the red carpet for the Olympic Committee by opening the door for environmentalists. About $1 billion dollars will be spent to make Beijing a greener city; some factories will be moved farther out of town and others that don't meet stricter emission standards will face fines or be asked to cut production. Realizing that government enforcement may not be enough to achieve their goal by 2008, the city government is also seeking help from non-government activist groups for the first time. CNN's Rebecca Mackinnon reports. RELATED STORIES: China jails activist over Olympic appeal RELATED SITES: International Olympic Committee |
