Airline to review child handling rulesPHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) -- A spokeswoman for America West Airlines said Thursday the airline is reviewing its procedures for handling children who fly alone. Patty Nowack said a "communications breakdown" Tuesday led to a father not being notified that his 10-year-old son had been placed on a later flight -- the second problem involving a lone child passenger in two weeks. Nowack said airline representatives told Cody Sherill's grandparents -- who had taken the boy to the airport in Columbus, Ohio for his return trip home to San Diego, California -- that his original flight had been canceled and he would take a later flight.
"We had neglected to call his father. It was our responsibility to call the father," Nowack said. "We take full responsibility for that." Family members became worried when the boy did not arrive as scheduled in San Diego. Cody was reunited with his father after he arrived Tuesday at Lindbergh Field, the San Diego airport, five hours later than expected. Nowack said the boy had been in the company of airline officials at all times. Last week, the airline lost track of an 11-year-old girl, who had been placed on the wrong flight. Nowack said the airline offered the Sherill family a refund for the flight. |
