Decision due on nude artwork at LAX

Susan Narduli's "The Wonders of the Heavens and Flying" was commissioned by American Airlines

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission was scheduled to decide the fate of a controversial airport art project in a meeting Thursday.

The artwork, which is etched in the floor of Los Angeles International Airport's American Airlines terminal, has male nudes depicted both running and taking flight, which the artist says were inspired by the Renaissance master Leonardo Da Vinci.

Artist Susan Narduli was commissioned by American Airlines and approved by the city's Cultural Affairs Commission to complete the works for American's reopening.

When the American terminal was unveiled last month, after a lengthy makeover, the artwork reportedly drew gasps from airport employees.

Since the unveiling, Narduli's work, entitled "The Wonders of the Heavens and Flying" has been kept under wraps while the airline, the airport and the Commission review the situation.

Narduli's sketches for the project were approved by the Cultural Affairs Commission in 1999.
