School bus rolls, crushes minivan in Michigan; 2 adults hurt

Children on bus escape serious injury

DETROIT, Michigan (CNN) -- A school bus carrying 45 students slid on an icy Detroit road and rolled over onto a minivan Thursday morning, seriously injuring the two people in the van.

None of the students on the school bus was seriously hurt.

The bus, with elementary and middle school students aboard, was attempting to stop at a stop sign when it slid on black ice and fishtailed, according to the Detroit Police Department. The bus then rolled over and crushed the minivan.

One of the occupants of the van, a male, was listed in serious condition. The other occupant, a 62-year-old woman, was also in serious condition and was being evaluated, according to Zoila Brown of St. John's Hospital.

Students taken to St. John's Medical Center in Detroit were not found to have serious injuries. Eventually, all 45 children will be taken there to be evaluated.

No information was available on the condition of the school bus driver.

The bus was on its way to Stark Elementary and Remus Robinson Middle schools on the eastern side of Detroit. The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m.

Black ice freezes as a sheet and is not visible on the pavement as ice.
