NEW YORK (CNN) -- You can kick, scream or stamp your feet, but if you don't have a one-cent stamp to put next to the 33-cent stamp on your letters or bills, they're going to come back to you as surely as a boomerang.

That fact of postal life makes the one-cent stamp a hot ticket every couple of years when the Post Office raises its rates.

And at a time when it's hard to find anything you can buy for a penny, Jeanne Moos invests her all in this report.
