Reward for Texas 7 grows to $440,000December 13 prison escapees still at largeDALLAS, Texas (CNN) -- The reward offered for the Texas 7 continues to grow. The FBI on Monday added another $140,000 to the bounty for the arrests and conviction of seven convicts who escaped December 13 from a maximum-security prison in south Texas and are still on the loose. The convicted murderers, robbers and other violent felons have since been charged with the Christmas Eve slaying of Aubrey Hawkins, a Dallas-area police officer. The additional bounty comes from the FBI's Dallas office and raises the total reward to $440,000. "This is important because of the death of Officer Hawkins," said Lori Biley, an FBI spokeswoman in Dallas.
Hawkins, a police officer in Irving, Texas, was shot 11 times when he responded to a robbery report at a local sporting goods store. Authorities say the December 24 robbery left the gang with a cache of more than 60 semiautomatic handguns, shotguns and rifles. Texas authorities believe the seven may be in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. RELATED STORIES: Prison staff could be fired in Texas inmates' escape RELATED SITES: Federal Bureau of Investigation |
