Reagan's doctors discuss his release

SANTA MONICA, California (CNN) -- Former President Ronald Reagan could be released from the hospital in a week, according to his spokeswoman.

A statement from Joanne Drake released Wednesday said "discussions have begun with doctors on the schedule for his release within the next seven days."

Reagan, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and will turn 90 on February 6, fell Friday at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. Doctors used a pin, plate and screws to repair the joint Saturday in a 65-minute operation at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

Drake said Reagan is in good spirits and continues to progress in his physical therapy sessions. She said nurses have noticed an increase in his appetite, and said Tuesday night the former president had a special meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and chocolate pudding.

Reagan's wife, Nancy, left the hospital briefly Wednesday for the first time since the former president was admitted last Friday, to get fresh clothes. Other family members continue to visit, including daughter Patti Davis and son Ron Reagan. Drake said several phone calls and letters have been coming in daily.

Reagan's other daughter, Maureen, 60, is in the John Wayne Cancer Institute at the same hospital with malignant melanoma. She was admitted December 11.

Maureen Reagan's mother is actress Jane Wyman, the former president's first wife.
