WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The conviction of one of the two Libyans accused of the Lockerbie bombing does not mean the end of the investigation, the acting U.S. attorney general has said.

"The case is not closed. The investigation continues," said Bob Mueller, minutes after judges in the Netherlands on Wednesday convicted one man but cleared the other charged of bringing down PanAm Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.

Mueller thanked Scottish investigators and the FBI, but added that work would continue to find who else may have been involved in the terrorist act. He said he was speaking on behalf of U.S. and Scottish authorities.

Neil Gallagher, assistant director of the FBI, who in 1988 was in charge of anti-terrorism, said: "I have a lot of mixed emotions.

"You look into the eyes of the families and you realise these are real people who lost their loved ones, so it's not a sense of satisfaction."

Gallagher added that he was pleased that the investigators' work had proved to be accurate in securing the conviction of one of the accused.

Abdel Baset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi was found guilty while Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah was cleared by judges sitting at a special court under Scottish law in Camp Zeist, the Netherlands.
