Government recalls night lights because of fire, shock risks

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Citing a fire and shock hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Monday a recall of 459,000 night lights.

The commission pointed to three dangerous problems with the lights: The electrical connections are loose, they are made of flammable plastic and the power switch does not work. There have been no reports of injury from the lights, so the recall is preventative.

The Dura Kleen night lights have a small light fixture, use a 5-watt bulb and have "Made in China for Dura Kleen USA Inc." printed on the white base.

The lights have different colored shades, including purple, green, yellow and red. Some lights have decorative shades molded in the form of religious figures.

They were sold in discount stores from March 1999 to August 2000 for about a dollar. Consumers should stop using the lights and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Discount stores nationwide sold the nightlights from March 1999 through August 2000 for about $1.

The CPSC's consumer hotline is (800) 638-2772.
