Toxicology report released for student charged in car crash deaths
SANTA BARBARA, California (CNN) -- The college student charged in the four pedestrian deaths caused from a car crash last month had traces of marijuana and a painkiller in his blood the night of the accident, according to toxicology reports. The report on David Edward Attias was released Tuesday night through the California Highway Patrol under the authorization of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office. According to the CHP, the painkiller found in Attias' bloodstream, lidocaine, is used for minor surgeries and emergency room procedures and as a "cutting agent" in illegal drug preparation. Police said Attias was speeding the night of February 23 in the Isla Vista community -- adjacent to the University of California Santa Barbara campus -- when he veered to the right, sideswiping nine cars with his 1991 Saab sedan. Five pedestrians walking between those cars were struck; four died.
Attias, 18, has been charged with four counts of murder, four counts of gross vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated, four counts of driving under the influence of drugs causing great bodily injury and additional counts connected to the victims who survived the crash. Attias is being held in the Santa Barbara County Jail. He has pleaded innocent to the charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court Monday. RELATED STORIES:
