Skydiving plane falls 500 feet to ground

A skydiving airplane crashed near Decatur, Texas, on Saturday

DECATUR, Texas (CNN) -- As many as seven people were injured Saturday when a skydiving plane carrying 17 to 19 people crashed about 10 miles east of Decatur, Texas, officials said.

No one was killed and the injured were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Fort Worth, 45 miles to the south, a Wise County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said.

A spokeswoman for Harris Methodist Hospital said four men were admitted, one in serious condition and the others in fair condition. They all had non-life-threatening injuries, she said.

One man was admitted to John Peter Smith Hospital in good condition with a broken leg, Nurse Eva Murray told CNN.

Six people were listed in stable condition at the Wise County Medical Center, spokeswoman Melba Haney said. One had a possible broken leg.

She said the injured told her they were on a skydiving trip, and that the plane fell from about 500 feet. The plane crashed into an open field near a creek.

The accident occurred in a region called Skydive, named for a skydive company based there, said Officer Cliff Swofford of the Decatur Police Department.

A woman who answered the phone at Skydive Texas said she did not want to discuss the accident.

An FAA spokesman identified the plane as a DeHavilland Otter and said it's owned by or maintained by a parachuting company.
