U.S. victims of Vietnam crash named

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon on Monday released the names of the seven active duty U.S. military personnel who were among the 16 people killed Saturday when their MI-17 helicopter crashed into a mountain in central Vietnam.

The dead included two Army lieutenant colonels who were the incoming and outgoing commanders of the U.S. military team involved in the joint effort to recover and identify the remains of American service members missing during the Vietnam conflict, the Army said.

The Army dead are identified as:

  • Lt. Col. Rennie Melville Cory Jr., of North Carolina, who was the outgoing detachment commander, Detachment 2, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting, Hanoi.

  • Lt. Col. George D. Martin, III, who was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York. Martin was the incoming detachment commander, Detachment 2, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting, Hanoi.

  • Sgt. 1st Class Tommy James Murphy, of Georgia, a mortuary affairs specialist assigned to the U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii, Hickham Air Force Base, Hawaii.

The Air Force dead are identified as:

  • Maj. Charles E. Lewis, 36, of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

  • Master Sgt. Steven L. Moser, 38, of San Diego, California.

  • Tech. Sgt. Robert M. Flynn, 35, of Huntsville, Alabama.

The Navy reported one fatality:

  • Medic Pedro J. Gonzales, 36, of Bangor, Maine.

The next of kin have been notified and positive identification of the remains is pending, the Pacific Command said Monday.

Vietnamese killed included two members of the Vietnamese Office of Seeking Missing Persons, the Vietnamese agency that assists Joint Task Force Full Accounting in its investigation-and-recover efforts in Vietnam.

In addition, three Vietnamese aircrew members and four aircraft technicians were lost.
