Firefighters battle smoky blaze in Manhattan high-rise
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Firefighters fought a smoky, three alarm blaze on the 24th floor of a 37-story Manhattan high-rise Monday. Initial reports indicated six firefighters had been hurt. In addition, two people had been treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The building, 30 Waterside Plaza, is located at 27th Street and the FDR Drive along the East River. Chief Brian Dixon said the fire was contained on the 24th floor of the building. He said firefighters were in the apartment where the fire is believed to have started and the blaze was being extinguished. Gray smoke could be seen wafting from the building. In addition, streams of water could be seen spurting from the broken windows. The building is being described as fire proof built of brick with self-closing doors in apartments and stairwells. Residents were being told to keep their doors closed. The fire department dispatched at least 25 units and 108 firefighters on the scene, Dixon said. There are five individuals from the Emergency management service who are also on the scene. There was no immediate word on evacuations. RELATED SITES:
