USS Greeneville gets a new boss

HONOLULU, Hawaii (CNN) -- The U.S. Navy announced Monday it has appointed a permanent replacement commander for the USS Greeneville, the submarine involved in a fatal collision with a Japanese training vessel in February.

Commander David S. Bogdan, former commanding officer of Submarine Squadron Six from Norfolk, Virginia, will take over command of the submarine, replacing Commander Scott Waddle, who was relieved of his command after the accident.

Capt. Tony Cortese had been serving as interim commander.

Nine people from the Japanese vessel, the Ehime Maru, are missing and presumed dead after their ship sank after being struck by the submarine as it surfaced during a training maneuver.

CNN Correspondent Martin Savidge contributed to this report.
