Lawyer: Investigation will clear Blake of wife's killing

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The attorney for Robert Blake said he gave police "relevant evidence" Thursday about the actor's wife who was shot to death a week ago.

"This will enable them to look into her background for hints or clues," attorney Harland Braun said.

Braun's characterization of Bonny Lee Bakley as a woman obsessed with celebrity and money has drawn fire from one of her former attorneys, who called her "a good woman."

Braun told The Associated Press that a warrant demanded that anything taken from Blake's home by the actor's attorneys be handed over to police.

The lawyer said the material he gave detectives included information on Bakley's "lonely hearts" mail-order business and her interest in other celebrities. He suggested tape recordings of telephone conversations that Bakley kept might point investigators toward her killer.

Police have not characterized the material turned over by Braun in any way.

Bakley, 44, was found shot to death in her husband's car Friday night outside an Italian restaurant the couple had dined in.

Blake, who portrayed a pugnacious private investigator in the 1970s TV series "Baretta," has been interviewed by police as a witness. Police say they are not ruling anyone out as a suspect.

Braun said the more the LAPD investigates Blake, the more "they'll find he didn't do it"

"We want the LAPD to investigate Robert Blake because the more they investigate, they'll find out he didn't do it," Braun said.

Braun said private investigators working on Blake's behalf were cooperating with police and the actor's bodyguard would be questioned by police Thursday.

Police carried out a second search of the actor's "Mata Hari" ranch home late Wednesday night, carrying out two bags of items.

They also towed a blue Mercedes Benz with the license plate 1RSKTKR from behind the guesthouse where Bakley lived. That vehicle was not the one in which she was shot.
