National Guard to help with wildfire in Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- National Guard troops are expected to arrive Tuesday at a site in northwest Florida where firefighters are battling a blaze that has scorched 60,732 acres. The Mallory Swamp fire in Dixie and Lafayette counties started Mother's Day. There have been no injuries or structural damage from it, but firefighters are still trying to contain it. It has not grown since Monday. The 44 National Guardsmen will join roughly 450 firefighters already on the scene, said Greg Dunn, a public information officer with the Florida Division of Forestry. There are dozens of wildfires throughout the state, which is suffering from a severe drought.
A new fire started Monday three miles northwest of the Mallory Swamp blaze. The Koon Pond fire covers 1,000 acres, Dunn said. In Lake County, firefighters are battling a 700-acre blaze in a dry lake bed. "It's going to continue to be a smoke problem until we get significant rainfall on it," said Erin Albury, a forest area supervisor with the Florida Division of Forestry. "There was some rain yesterday, but not enough to extinguish it." Authorities believe smoke from that blaze may have been a contributing factor to numerous accidents Monday along an interstate highway near Disney World. |
