California wildfire crosses into Nevada
RENO, Nevada (CNN) -- A roaring wildfire in the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains has crossed from California into Nevada, officials said Monday. No injuries or structural damage have been reported, they said. "It has, in fact, come over the mountains," said Steve Robinson, the Nevada state forester. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 acres have been scorched by the blaze, according to fire officials in both states. Interstate 80, which had been temporarily closed Sunday afternoon, reopened last night and traffic was moving in both directions, said Murray Jansen, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention. About two dozen residents of the Sierra Nevada community of Floriston who had been evacuated Sunday were allowed to return home. Robinson said no evacuations have been ordered in Nevada, but that could change depending on how the fire progresses. Jansen said 1,608 fire personnel, 500 engines, 40 bulldozers, nine helicopters, 10 air tankers and 20 water trucks were fighting the blaze. Robinson said the blaze was about 15 to 20 miles west of Reno, but the fire was not headed toward the resort town. |
