Police comparing missing intern case with others

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Police are probing at least five other cases of missing young women in the nation's capital -- looking for similarities to the Chandra Levy case.

Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrance Gainer said an examination of the 76 open missing persons cases in the District of Columbia this year found that five involve women in their 20's.

"If there's a pattern there, we'd better well know about it," said Gainer. "There's been no indication that's the case. But we're going to further satisfy ourselves by doing a little bit more homework."

Gainer would not divulge the exact number, the race of the women, or whether they had jobs and then disappeared for no apparent reason.

"A lot more investigative work needs to be done," said Gainer. "Whether they're any closer in profile, I just don't have the information yet. My detectives are working on it."

Gainer also said D.C. police want to interview the wife of California Congressman Gary Condit, who has said he and the intern are friends.

"We want to interview her to complete the picture about what's going on in this case," said Gainer. "There's still no particular suspect. There's some suspicious things. And we want to work through those. But no particular suspect." Details of the interview had not been completed, he said.

Levy was last seen April 30 at a Washington gym. She had just completed an internship at the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was preparing to return to her family's home in Modesto, California, for her university graduation.
