Carolyn Condit questioned about Washington visit
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The wife of Congressman Gary Condit was questioned for more than three hours to determine precisely when she was with and not with her husband in the days before missing former intern Chandra Levy was last seen, a top law enforcement official told CNN Friday. The congressman's office has said Condit's wife Carolyn was in Washington from April 28 through May 3. Levy, a former intern with the Federal Bureau of Prisons who was preparing to return home to California, was last seen April 30, but authorities believe she originated an e-mail to her parents dated May 1. The law enforcement source, a top official familiar with all facets of the investigation, said Thursday's interview with Mrs. Condit was "entirely about a minute-by-minute description of what happened during the period when she was in town ... the times she was with him and the times she was not." Police Chief Charles Ramsey and other ranking officials in the Metropolitan Police Department have said the congressman is not a suspect in Levy's disappearance, which investigation authorities are handling as a missing persons case. Asked whether anything new was learned from the interview with Carolyn Condit, the source responded, "Not particularly. Not anything that brings us closer." Describing in greater detail the status of the investigation, the source told CNN authorities might call Rep. Condit in for a third interview. "I would suspect that as we develop more leads, I'm sure that's a possibility," the source said, but emphasized that there is nothing scheduled. In the same context, he added that there are no plans to search the Condit apartment at this time. The 53-year-old Condit, through aides, has acknowledged a friendship with the 24-year-old Levy denied that the relationship was romantic. The law enforcement source was asked whether investigators have concluded there was a romantic relationship between Condit and Levy. "I don't know if I would be there yet. I am very suspicious of what other people's agendas are," the source said. On Thursday, Ramsey told reporters about 100 people have now been interviewed in the case. The source Friday said the vast majority of the group came from those who were visiting the Washington Sports Clubs outlet April 30, the day Levy was last seen. Others, according to this source, have included friends, family and colleagues both in Washington and in California where Levy is from. The Levy family home in Modesto is in Condit's district. |
