Small plane crash hurts pilot, causes delays at Logan

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- A commuter plane crashed shortly after takeoff at Boston's Logan International Airport on Sunday, but the pilot, the only person on board, walked away with minor injuries, an airport official said.

Jason Watson, 29, suffered burns to his legs and "some bumps and bruises" in the crash, which happened moments after the twin-engine Cape Air propeller plane took off at 12:13 p.m., according to airport spokeswoman Laura White.

"Its left wing seemed to hit the ground and the plane flipped over," White said.

The plane caught fire and burned in a heap on a grassy area next to the taxiway. Fire rescue units helped extinguish the flames.

The accident forced the airport to shut down for about 20 minutes, White said. As late as 6:30 p.m., she added, Logan was still experiencing 15-minute air delays and hourlong ground delays as a result of the crash.

"We were operating with two (of three) runways after this crash, and that added to the slowdown," White said.

Watson was ferrying the nine-seat plane to Nantucket Island, where it was to pick up passengers and make a return flight to Logan, White said. A statement from Cape Air said Watson joined its staff in January.

Cape Air is a regional airline with service to and from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, the Caribbean and southern Florida.
