Firefighters contain wildfires near San BernardinoSAN BERNARDINO, California (CNN) -- Firefighters Saturday completely contained a 630-acre brush fire near the Cajon Pass, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, a fire official said. "We do have 100 percent containment," said Ruk Read, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.
"Containment" means the fire is contained within earthen or burned-out borders, but is still burning. The fire began Friday as multiple fires, said U.S. Forestry Department spokesman Alan Herrington. "Some we were able to quickly contain," he said, "but other fires burned together to form the one fire burning now." Herrington said the cause of the fire is unknown. Officials are investigating reports that the fire was sparked by a train passing through the area. About 300 firefighters worked to put out the flames using six air tankers, four helicopters and several ground crews. The area is sparsely populated so no evacuations have been ordered, Herrington said. At one point, the flames threatened power transmission lines in the area, but Read said that threat has dissipated. |
