Levy family attorney: Condit 'dishonest in his answers'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Billy Martin, attorney for the family of Chandra Levy, said that Rep. Gary Condit was "dishonest in his answers" during an interview by ABC's Connie Chung and has continued to "frustrate the investigation" into the disappearance of the missing former intern. Martin spoke Thursday night on ABC's "Nightline" after the interview aired and to reporters after the program. Martin said Levy's mother Susan -- who claims Condit told her he did not have an affair with their daughter when she asked him about it -- was "outraged" by Condit's reaction that she "misunderstood" their conversations. "She did not ask me that question," Condit said. "I told Mrs. Levy the truth. I'm sorry and I regret if she misunderstood what I had to say. ... I never lied to Mrs. Levy." Martin said Susan Levy is "very clear" that she asked Condit whether he was having an affair with her daughter. "Mrs. Levy will not back away, she told me I was authorized to say that if Gary Condit says she is mistaken, he is lying," Martin said. Parents 'very upset'Condit also refuted comments by Levy's aunt, Linda Zamsky, that Levy and Condit discussed marriage and children. "I never had those conversations, so I don't know where the aunt got that," the congressman said. But Martin said he called Zamsky "to make sure our facts were accurate from the family's position." "Zamsky is very clear," Martin said. "She had a long conversation with Chandra where Chandra was telling her, 'I love this man. We have a meaningful relationship. I've told him I want to have children. He loves me enough to agree to it. He cares enough about me to agree that I can have a child.' " When Condit was asked by Chung if he knew whether Chandra Levy was pregnant, he said, "I have no reason to think that." Meanwhile, a source close to the Levys said they were "very upset" and "on the edge of their seats" during Condit's ABC interview.
The Levys watched a videotaped copy of the 30-minute interview, the source told CNN. "They were on the edge of their seats the entire time," the source said. During the interview, Condit, 53, admitted to having a close relationship with Levy and said he liked her very much, and he said "No," when Chung asked, "Did you kill Chandra Levy?" The source said watching the interview was an emotional experience for the parents. "They were very upset with what they heard during the Condit interview," the source said. 'Deep suspicions'Levy, a former U.S. Bureau of Prisons intern, was last seen April 30, and in an interview last week with CNN's Larry King, Levy's parents said that they hold Condit partly responsible for their daughter's disappearance. While not directly accusing the California Democrat, Susan Levy told King that she believes her daughter would be around if Condit had not been a part of her life. "I feel like that for some reason, internally, that as a mother that it's possible that my daughter would have graduated and she would be here with us" if not for her relationship with Condit, she said. Robert Levy echoed his wife's comments, saying he had "deep suspicions" that Condit was involved in his daughter's disappearance. He told King that he thought Condit knew more than he had admitted. |
