INS detainees carry passports from many countriesATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Among the dozens of people detained so far by the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks are individuals bearing passports from a wide number of countries. Those nations include Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India, Israel, Jordan, Great Britain and the Palestinian National Authority, according to government sources. The British passport holder was born in Iran and at least one of the Pakistani passport holders is of Kuwaiti origin. "We have every reason to believe we have some terrorists in custody," said one source, who added that others would clearly turn out to have absolutely nothing to do with the terrorist attacks. The Justice Department is promising to release heavily redacted copies of the detention orders Friday; no names will be included. The FBI said Friday it is searching for more than 230 people to question in connection with the ongoing terrorism investigation. The all-out international probe continues to be fueled in part by a massive public response, which now totals more than 134,000 "tips and potential leads," according to the Justice Department. The FBI said it had received 70,169 contacts through its Internet address, 12,196 calls to its toll-free hot line, and 51,747 phone calls directly to its 56 field offices around the nation. Some of those leads it described as "productive" in helping it pursuing associates of the hijackers. By mid-day Friday the INS, working with the FBI, had detained "more than 80" individuals on possible immigration violations while the FBI continues to learn more about their activities. A government source said the number given earlier -- 115 -- was inaccurate and that exact numbers would no longer be provided. Evidence response teams at the three crash sites have so far submitted more than 100 evidence samples to the FBI headquarters lab. |
