Armed tactical units guard South Dakota airports

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (CNN) -- Gov. William Janklow said Thursday he's ordered "tactical units" armed with automatic weapons to be stationed at his state's airports to help passengers and plane crews feel safe in the wake of this month's terrorist attacks.

"I don't know where trouble's going to launch again in America," Janklow, a Republican, said in an interview with CNN. "But I can tell you this: In my state, it's not going to be a launching pad for anybody. If a fight starts, our people are going to have automatic weapons."

Using strong language, Janklow said all 50 states should work with the federal government in training armed marshals to fly on airplanes.

"We're at war and we got to kill the enemy," he said. "We can't treat this as a joke. This is a serious matter."

Janklow dismissed the idea that arresting people is the way to respond to the September 11 attacks, in which 19 hijackers slammed three U.S. commercial jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing thousands.

"Where I come from, when you have a war, you don't arrest people and put them on trial, you kill the people that are the warmongers and then after the war's over, you arrest and prosecute their leaders," the governor said.

Janklow said the units would be made of SWAT team members and officers, not National Guard troops.
