Ranks of reservists called to active duty swell

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- More than 3,400 reservists and National Guard members were called to active duty Monday as part of the partial mobilization authorized by President Bush, the Pentagon said.

Most were from Army units, and brings the number of reservists and National Guard members called up since the September 11 terrorist attacks to more than 20,000 out of an expected 35,000.

Officials said 2,328 more Army reservists and Army National Guard members were being called to active duty as part of the mobilization. This brings the total Army Reserve force soldiers called to active duty to about 3,235.

The soldiers called to active duty in the latest announcement serve in 31 different units from 15 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, the Pentagon said. Among the specialties the units represent are are military police, transportation, air defense, military historian, supply, ordnance, infantry and special operations.

Also, 929 more Air National Guard and Air Force reservists from five different units in four states are being called to active duty. This brings the total number of Air Force reservists called to active duty to more than 12,000.

In addition, approximately 170 more members of the Naval Reserve were being called to active duty. This brings the total Naval Reserve called to active duty to approximately 1,890 to date the Pentagon said.

The majority of these Naval reservists have been recalled individually based on specific skills, predominantly law enforcement and security. Other skills getting activated include reservists with skills in medicine, supply, intelligence and other specialties.

The total National Guard members and reservists being called to active duty has surpassed 20,000 from 115 units, 43 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
