Man kills ex-wife, son and self in Dallas suburb

HIGHLAND PARK, Texas (CNN) -- A man shot and killed his ex-wife and their 8-year-old son and also wounded their 14-year-old son Wednesday night before turning the 9-mm handgun on himself in this community just north of downtown Dallas, police said.

Det. Randy Millican, with the Highland Park Department of Public Safety, said the man, believed to be in his 40s, arrived shortly after 6:30 p.m. to take his sons out to dinner, an outing he had prearranged with the mother.

Millican said the man opened fire inside the house, shooting both his ex-wife and the 8-year-old in the head. He also chased the 14-year-old into the front yard, shooting him twice in the upper back.

The man returned to the house where he took his own life with what Millican described as a "self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."

Millican said the couple had been divorced for several years and she had remarried about a year ago. The father remained estranged from his sons until resuming contact with them about a month ago.

The names of the family members haven't been released, Millican said, because the woman's husband was out of town on a business trip and has not been contacted yet.

The 14-year-old was hospitalized Wednesday night for the gunshot wounds.
