F-16s force small plane to land in central Florida

OCALA, Florida (CNN) -- Authorities converged Thursday on a small propeller plane at a central Florida airport after two military fighter jets forced it to land.

Two F-16s escorted the plane to Ocala International Airport Thursday afternoon, and FBI agents arrived quickly to question the pilot.

The Federal Aviation Administration called on the plane to land because it had "questions about his flight plan," FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto said.

The Ocala airport was closed following the incident, and two nearby schools went into temporary lockdown, according to Sgt. Russ Kern of the Ocala Police Department. Classes later recessed and students went home as normal. The airport reopened by late afternoon.

The plane was parked about 200 yards away from any other aircraft, Kern said. A bomb squad from the Marion County Sheriff's Office inspected the plane and found nothing unusual, he said.

An airport spokeswoman said law enforcement authorities had taken away the aircraft's pilot for questioning.
