Two hurt in Pennsylvania warehouse fire
TULLYTOWN, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Two people were recovering Saturday from burns suffered in a massive fire at a chemical manufacturing company that destroyed a warehouse and sent flames hundreds of feet into the air. Both victims suffered chemical burns, a dispatcher with the Bucks County Emergency Communications office said. One was taken to Lower Bucks Hospital in nearby Bristol, but officials there would not give details. The other was taken to the burn unit of Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and was in stable condition early Saturday, a nurse said. The fire broke out around 6:45 p.m. Friday in the warehouses of Gelest Inc., a chemical company along the Delaware River near Trenton, New Jersey. The buildings were destroyed, the dispatcher said. The building was engulfed with flames by the time the first fire crews arrived. Flames and black smoke shot through the night air, and aerial footage showed the roof glowing orange and collapsing in several places. Fire marshals were still investigating the cause of the fire. Firefighters put the flames under control by 1:30 a.m. Saturday and continued mopping up the site into the early morning hours. Gelest makes chemicals and metal compounds including silicones, tin, and lead. The company could not be reached for comment early Saturday. |
