Firetruck hits Greyhound bus, injuring at least 35 near Buffalo, N.Y.
FORT ERIE, Canada (CNN) -- A fire truck struck a passenger bus Friday as the truck, responding to an emergency, sped through a traffic intersection, according to the Fort Erie Fire Department. About 35 people were injured, including four firefighters who had to be transported to the hospital, said Keith German of the Fort Erie Fire Department. Five were injured in a two-car accident that the firefighters were responding to, German said. "We were just in the backyard talking and there was a large bang," said resident Tom Ashick. The bus, owned by Greyhound, was operated by Trentway-Weger Bus Lines, an Ontario-based company that carries passengers from Toronto, Ontario, to Buffalo, New York, less than five miles outside Fort Erie. From Buffalo, Greyhound Bus Lines takes passengers to New York City. Jim Devlin, president of Trentway-Weger, said the crash happened shortly before the bus reached the Fort Erie stop. When asked about the details of the accident, Devlin said "everyone is focused on the passengers right now," noting that most received "bumps and scrapes," but the driver broke her leg in the accident. Video of the scene showed the bus on its side, as firefighters treated the injured in the front lawn of a nearby house. The video showed the front end of a Fort Erie Fire and Rescue truck, smashed with the engine hanging over the front of the vehicle. |
