Divers discover 6-year-old's body in Texas park

CADDO, Texas (CNN) -- Divers on Wednesday discovered the body of a 6-year-old boy who wandered away from his family while hiking this weekend in a north-central Texas park.

Ira Clutter, of Silsbee, Texas, disappeared late Saturday morning during a hiking trip with his father, sister and family friends in Possum Kingdom State Park, about 130 miles west of Dallas. He was reported missing about two hours later.

Authorities discovered his body in Possum Kingdom Lake at 10:50 a.m. (11:50 a.m. EST) Wednesday, just 500 yards from where he was last seen.

"I'm sure he probably lost his way, and wound up in a pretty precarious place," said park police spokesman Rocky Holland, noting there are some steep areas around the lake. He did not know if Clutter knew how to swim, Holland said.

Divers from the Texas Department of Public Safety began searching the 19,800-acre lake near the hiking trail Sunday, failing to find Clutter before returning to the state capital of Austin.

Hundreds of volunteers on horseback and in boats joined Texas game wardens, state Forest Service personnel and members of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the search.

The divers were asked to return Tuesday night after one of the boy's shoes was found, Holland said.

Divers found the boy's body about five feet from where the shoe was found, and shortly after resuming their efforts on Wednesday morning, Holland said.

Authorities informed Clutter's family about the discovery of the boy's body two hours after they left the park, Holland said.
