U.S. forecast: Snow in Great Lakes, Northeast

Snow was in the forecast Thursday for parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, New England and the rest of the Northeast, while rain was on tap for the southern Plains and much of the West.

Cool, dry weather was forecast for the Southeast, mid- Atlantic and Mississippi Valley.

Showers were expected in western Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

In the West, light showers were possible east of California. Thunderstorms may rumble through Arizona, southern California, southern Nevada, and New Mexico.

Heavy snowfall -- up to a foot -- was possible in the higher elevations of the Rockies, Idaho, Utah and northern Nevada.

Highs were expected Thursday in the teens and 20's in the Northeast and Great Lakes; 20's and 30's in the northern Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley, northern and central Plains, Appalachians, Mississippi Valley, Rockies and southern portion of the Northeast; 30's and 40's in the southern Plains, Tennessee Valley, south Mid-Atlantic, and northern portion of the Southeast; 40s and 50s in the Pacific Northwest; and 50's in Texas, Louisiana, the Southeast and Florida.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from 75 degrees in Chandler, Arizona, to minus 11 degrees in Craig, Colorado, and Berlin, New Hampshire.
