The Houston Fire Department sent rescue boats to evacuate 3 subdivisions

HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- Residents in the Houston area awoke Thursday to flooding of hundreds of homes and disruption of morning traffic after the remnants of Tropical Storm Allison dumped up to a foot of rain on the region overnight.

As many as 1,300 homes have been affected, mainly in the Sims Bayou flood plain south of the city, a Red Cross spokesman said.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

The Houston Fire Department sent two rescue boats to evacuate three subdivisions in the southern part of the city. Several heavy trucks from the public works department also helped with evacuations.

The slow-moving weather system made landfall along the Gulf coast overnight Tuesday and has already inflicted millions of dollars in damage from Houston to New Orleans.

Local television stations showed flooded homes in neighborhoods south of Houston, cars slowly making their way through nearly a foot of standing water, and rescue workers surveying the area by boat.

Another 10 inches of rain could occur before the storm moves away. The storm is nearly stationary with a slight drift to the southwest.

Flood warnings remain in effect for the Houston area.

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers contributed to this report.
