Flooding causes road closures in New York

SYRACUSE, New York (CNN) -- Non-stop rain in Cortland County, about 35 miles south of here, flooded the small creeks and rivers Saturday, forcing emergency workers to close off roads and possibly shut of the power in some areas.

The village of McGraw, with about 1,000 residents, is the worst hit, according to Fire Chief Lawrence Petrie who is handling emergency calls to the entire flooded area. Heavy rain began to fall Friday evening at about 7:30p.m. EDT and continues to fall into Saturday.

About six inches of rain was sitting on the town's main street, raising the concern that the water would seep into residents' basements and come into contact with electrical wiring and gas furnaces.

Petrie said he was trying to convice the local authorities to shut of electric power into McGraw, for safety concerns.

So far, no residents have been evacuated from the area.

Water draining off the hills and into the low-lying areas of Cortland County, including Solon and Harford, have caused scattered flooding over the past 18 hours.

The National Weather Service reports the rain in the area should end by Saturday evening, with an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain. A flash flood watch was in effect, Saturday afternoon, in the Cortland County area with no imminent warnings.
