Danas tracked northwestward at 10 knots

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Japan is bracing for heavy rain as Typhoon Danas approaches its southeast coast bringing with it up to 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rainfall in some areas by Tuesday.

At 6:00 a.m. (2100GMT), Danas was about 481 kilometers (298 miles) southwest of Tokyo, nearing Cape Shiono on the southeast coast, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Hawaii reported.

The center said Danas had tracked northwestward at 10 knots (18.5 km/h) during the past six hours.

The center said the typhoon was packing winds gusting to 100 knots, but was expected to weaken significantly as it approached landfall.

The Associated Press reported that rainfall in Amagiyugashima, a hot spring resort in Shizuoka state in central Japan, recorded 51 millimeters (2 inches) of rain between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday.

Local NHK television reported that some transport services had been canceled and many highways closed to traffic as the typhoon neared.

Meanwhile, another storm, Typhoon Nari, had remained quasi-stationary, approximately 155 nautical miles (286 km) west northwest off Kadena -- one of the islands in the Okinawan chain in Japan's southernmost prefecture -- and 190 nautical miles from Taipei.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center said Nari was packing winds of 75 knots (130 km/h) gusting to 90 knots.
