CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (CNN) -- Juliette, once a hurricane, weakened into a tropical depression on Sunday and forecasters said dangerous surf conditions were expected to subside in western Mexico and southern and central Baja California.

The government of Mexico discontinued all tropical storm warnings for the Baja California peninsula, but warned marine interests to exercise caution until winds and seas subsided.

An additional two to four inches of rain was expected over northwestern Mexico, and forecasters warned of a continued threat of flash floods and mudslides in mountainous regions.

At 2 a.m. PDT, Juliette was centered just north of Cabo San Lazaro on the west coast of Baja California. Its maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph, and continued slow weakening was expected over the next 24 hours.

The depression was moving toward the north-northwest at near 5 mph.

Juliette has claimed the lives of two local fishermen and a surfer from Denver, Colorado in the past several days and destroyed several flimsy homes of wood and aluminum in poor neighborhoods of Cabo San Lucas

Baja California Sur state Governor Leonel Cota Montano was scheduled to fly by helicopter to view the damage and offer assistance, Notimex said.
