Deal reached in case of defiant Zimbabwe judge
HARARE, Zimbabwe (CNN) -- An agreement was reached Friday in the standoff between Zimbabwe's government and the country's Chief Justice Anthony Gubbay, the justice's attorney said.
The government had announced Gubbay had been fired this past Tuesday, but Gubbay defiantly showed up to work, saying that he was still chief justice until his retirement begins next year. The details of the agreement were not disclosed, but a lawyer for the chief justice said both parties had come to an agreement and a joint statement would be issued. The attorney added that the government had acted responsibly and had shown flexibility in resolving the standoff. The justice remained in his office. The government said it had lost confidence in Gubbay and could no longer guarantee his safety. Gubbay has issued several judgments that were not in support of the policies of the Robert Mugabe government. RELATED SITES:
