Rebels kill 91 in Angola attack

LISBON, Portugal -- Reports from Angola say 91 people have died when gunmen attacked a train carrying more than 500 refugees.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 16.

The Portuguese news agency Lusa said the train hit a mine in northwestern Angola, derailing and bursting into flames before coming under attack.

Lusa said the refugees were fleeing fighting between the government and UNITA rebel forces, who have been in conflict since Angola's 1975 independence from Portugal.

The train was travelling southeast from the capital of Luanda to the city of Dondo, about 100 miles southeast of Luanda.

Lusa quoted witnesses as saying that the gunmen attacked, spraying passengers with gunfire, after the train hit the mine.

A local radio station in Dondo quoted officials in surrounding Cambambe district as saying 91 people were killed and 146 wounded, Lusa said.

The war in Angola has forced more than three million people -- about a quarter of Angola's population -- from their homes.
